This holiday police report provides a brief recap of policing in Merritt in 2024, some appreciation, a message to drivers and a holiday message to Merrittonians.
The year 2024 has been an incredibly busy year for the officers and support staff at the Merritt RCMP Detachment. We have been involved in and witnessed some terrible tragedies and our hearts go out to the families that have suffered unimaginable loss this holiday season. We want to thank our Victim Services workers, who have tirelessly supported the victims and their families.
The Detachment hit its highest file count in 5 years and submitted well over 600 charge recommendations to the BC Prosecution Service. Due to major police incidents in 2024, officers from around the South East District, including the Emergency Response Team, found themselves in our community many times helping our local officers deal with repeat violent offenders. The support of those officers and teams, the public, our local municipal government and the provincial government has helped us endure. We want to thank them for their continued support. We also want to thank the Special Investigations and Targeted Enforcement Program through the Province of BC, which provided the Merritt RCMP $142,862.12 of Provincial funding to cover extra policing costs related to the apprehension of a repeat violent offender this fall.
We want to encourage drivers to be vigilant this holiday season. The road conditions on our local highways are always changing and often unpredictable. Please drive slowly and safely.
On behalf of the Merritt RCMP Detachment, I want to wish all Merrittonians and your families a very Merry Christmas and a peaceful holiday season. Thank you for your continued support and we look forward to continuing to serve this community in 2025 and beyond.
