Burnaby RCMP warns of distraction thefts occurring in Burnaby, Lower Mainland

Burnaby, Public Alert

2025-06-18 13:19 PDT

Burnaby RCMP is warning the public of distraction thefts that continue to occur in Burnaby and throughout the Lower Mainland.

Three distraction thefts have been reported in Burnaby over the past few weeks.

In each case, a female suspect has approached an elderly victim visibly wearing jewelry while a male suspect is waiting in a nearby vehicle. The suspect distracts the victim with flattery or speaking very quickly while getting up close and attempting to replace the victim’s expensive jewelry with nearly worthless jewelry.

Two of these victims lost a necklace. The third victim managed to keep her jewelry while making a scene and creating witnesses.

We’re asking the public to have a discussion with their family and friends to let them know about this type of theft, said Cpl Mike Kalanj with the Burnaby RCMP. Anyone can become the victim of this type of crime, however, it is generally seniors being targeted.

How to stay safe:

Police are asking anyone that has been a victim of this type of crime to please call 9-1-1 immediately. If you wait to report a crime to police, it is less likely the suspects will be located.
