Excessive speed impound

While making routine patrols on Highway 37, north of Kitimat on May 23rd, at 9:14 am, a Kitimat RCMP officer noticed a vehicle that appeared to be travelling at a high rate of speed. The officer activated their Radar unit and found that the vehicle was travelling at 142 km/h in the 100 km/h speed zone. A traffic stop was initiated and the driver was issued a violation ticket for excessive speed. The vehicle was impounded for 7 days. (2025-1738)

Vessel safety checks

On May 24th, officers of the Kitimat RCMP detachment conducted vessel safety checks at a local marina. 10 vessels were checked with officers ensuing all documents were in order and the vessels had the appropriate safety gear required. Out of the 10 checks done, four vessels required safety gear to be updated before they were allowed to leave. The most common issue found was expired PDF’s with a few other items missing such as a heaving line, flares and ensuring fire extinguishers were valid.

Intoxicated patron

The Kitimat RCMP received a call for service at a local drinking establishment on May 24th at 11:59 pm. The call referenced a male that arrived at the establishment and was already to intoxicated to be provided service. When the service was refused, the male caused a disturbance. The investigating officers arrived and located the intoxicated male. He was arrested for causing a disturbance by being intoxicated in public and was taken back to the Kitimat RCMP cells to be held until sober. The follow day the male was released after being served a violation ticket for being intoxicated in public. (2025-1769) 

Take auto without consent

A Kitimat resident, who had lent their vehicle to a friend, contacted the Kitimat RCMP on May 25th for assistance. It was reported the friend was to use the vehicle to get to a certain destination, however it appeared that the friend went much further, well beyond what was discussed. In fact, the vehicle was eventually recovered several hundreds of kilometers from the agreed use. As a result, an investigation into ‘Take an auto without consent’ has been started. (2025-1770)

Accidental 911 emergency alert call

The Kitimat RCMP received a 911 hang up call to a residence in the Kildala neighbourhood at 9:24 am on May 27th. The investigating officer attended there was not an emergency in progress. It was found that the resident had accidently set of their emergency alert necklace. The Kitimat RCMP would like to remind residents that if they ever accidently call emergency services through 911, please ensure you stay on line and speak to the 911 call taker. If no one is spoken to, a file will always be dispatched to police to attend and ensure everything is alright. (2025-1769)

Excessive speed / IRP traffic stop

While conducting proactive patrols along Kitamaat Village Road at 8:30 pm on May 28th, a Kitimat RCMP officer noted a vehicle that appeared to be traveling at an excessive speed. The officer activated their Radar unit and found the vehicle to be travelling at 125 km/h in the posted 50 km/h speed zone. A traffic stop was conducted. During the traffic stop, the officer also began an investigation into the impaired operation of the vehicle. The driver provided two samples of their breath into an approved screening device. The samples provided resulted in a Warn result. The driver was issued a 3-day immediate driving prohibition, a violation ticket for excessive speed and the vehicle was impounded for 7 days.
