File # 2025-969

A novice driver was stopped by BC Highway Patrol after being clocked at 163 km/h in a posted 100 km/h zone at the end of March.

The driver, who did not have their N sign displayed as required under the Graduated Licensing Program, was also found to be driving with a covered licence plate. They were issued violation tickets for excessive speed, failure to display an N sign, and having a covered plate.

Constable Van Wieringen, who was recognized as a top performer in North District BC Highway Patrol, conducted the traffic stop.

When someone is driving at that speed, they're not just putting themselves at risk — they’re endangering everyone around them said Cst. Van Wieringen.

With spring now underway, Smithers RCMP and BC Highway Patrol are reminding drivers to slow down and stay alert. Warmer weather often means more motorcyclists, cyclists, and pedestrians on the road as well as rapidly changing driving conditions.

Cst. Van Wieringen is a huge asset to our team, says Acting Corporal Melissa Murray. Public safety is a shared responsibility, and it takes all areas of policing. Whether it’s highway patrol, general duty or community policing we all have a role to play to reduce harm and keep people safe, added A/Cpl. Murray.

Smithers RCMP and BC Highway patrol remind all road users that traffic laws are in place to protect everyone.
