Charges are being recommended against a man for possession of property obtained by crime after a routine boat check was performed by the RCMP’s West Coast Marine Services.

While performing harbour patrols in the afternoon of July 30th, 2024 West Coast Marine RCMP members conducted a boat check under the Canada Shipping Act, a routine check that helps ensure boaters in the water have the correct safety equipment, licenses and registration, they came across a man in a boat where the vessel’s Hull Identification Number, or HIN, appeared to be tampered with.
The members then terminated the man’s voyage and escorted him back to shore where they continued their investigation. Once ashore the members discovered the boat was reported stolen, they seized the boat and trailed as evidence, arrested the man for possession of property obtained by crime over $5000 and provided him with release paperwork for a future court date.
Boat checks are quite common all year round, but particularly in the Summer time when marine traffic is increased significantly, Media Relations Officer Constable Brody Hemrich said, typically they are more educational pieces for boaters to ensure they have the correct paperwork and equipment, however, this time a boat check also helped discover stolen property which is great work by our West Coast Marine partners.
