Man charged following structure fire in Newton

An investigation led by the Surrey RCMP General Investigations Unit has resulted in charges following a fire in a Newton neighbourhood.

On October 18, 2024 Surrey RCMP responded to the 7800 block of 122 Street to assist the Surrey Fire Department with a report of a residential structure fire. See previous release: Surrey RCMP investigating possible arson in Newton neighbourhood.

A male suspect was arrested at the scene and transported to Surrey RCMP Detachment.

29-year-old Mohammad Hashimi was charged with one count of arson causing damage to property and two counts of assault with a weapon.

Hashimi has been remanded until his next court date on October 24, 2024. The investigation is ongoing.
