School is back in session and here are some school zone safety tips

Students are back in school and the West Shore RCMP Traffic Unit and Frontline officers will be conducting regular school zone patrols.

It’s important to make sure you are familiar with school zone traffic laws. Here are some school zone safety tips that will help keep students and pedestrians safe:

School Zone Safety Tips, a message from West Shore RCMP:

• School crosswalks: drivers must obey school crossing guards and must yield to pedestrians. Do not pass other vehicles that have slowed down or stopped for other pedestrians.
• School zones: The school zone signs remind drivers that you are entering a school zone and to be on alert.
• School zone speed limit: Drivers must obey the school zone speed limit of 30 km/hr during school days from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
• Traffic calming: On-pavement markings like vertical delineators and roadway narrowing help slow down and direct traffic flow near schools to improve pedestrian safety.
• Stop when school bus lights are flashing red: drivers are required to stop for school buses with activated stop signs and red flashing lights.
