House fire deemed not suspicious after investigation

Northern Rockies

2024-10-11 19:18 PDT

File # 2024-2475

On October 11th, 2024 Northern Rockies RCMP received a call for a suspicious fire at 4500 block of Nahanni Drive, Fort Nelson. An abandoned residence was found to be on fire and first responders attended. The property is commonly used by unhoused people for shelter at night. Northern Rockies Fire Rescue attended quickly extinguished the blaze.

Northern Rockies RCMP began an investigation with Northern Rockies Fire Rescue and it was determined the fire was not suspicious. No windows were broken, and there were no signs of forced entry or any suspicious persons in the area. It is believed that a small fire was started in the back bedroom for warmth and became out of control due to the amount of items, including propane tanks and gas powered equipment, in the home. Due to the structural integrity of the home, and risk to public safety the home was torn down.

Northern Rockies RCMP would like to thank all those who assisted in this investigation, especially Northern Rockies Fire Rescue, says Cpl. Brett Urano RCMP spokesperson. We are glad that there were not any injuries and that the property is now safe.
