On August 6 2024, at approximately 1:13 p.m., West Shore RCMP Frontline officers attended the scene of a single vehicle collision involving a U-Haul truck on Island Hwy near Burnett Rd in View Royal.

The U-Haul was travelling on Island Hwy when the driver lost control and crashed into a power pole, causing significant damage to the power pole.

View Royal Fire Department and BC Emergency Health Services also attended the scene. Due to the danger of live powerlines, the driver and passenger had to be carefully extracted from the vehicle by View Royal Fire Department. Police shut down both directions of travel due to the danger involved with the damaged power lines. BC Hydro was called to the scene to repair the damage.

The driver and passenger received minor injuries and are expected to recover. Driver error is believed to be the cause of the collision. The 30-year-old male driver was issued a ticket for drive without due care which carries a $368 fine and 6 penalty points against their licence.

Many residents in the area were affected by temporary power loss. The roads were re-opened shortly after 7:00 p.m.
