Update #6 on police enforcement of injunction order in Fairy Creek Watershed

B.C., Lake Cowichan

2021-05-23 18:22 PDT

There was no planned or scheduled enforcement of the BC Supreme Court injunction order in the Fairy Creek Watershed area today, Sunday May 23, 2021, and therefore, no persons were arrested.

On Saturday May 22, 2021 while police enforcement was underway in the Port Renfrew portion of the Fairy Creek Watershed, numerous individuals blocked traffic in both directions along the McClure Forest Service Road at the access control check point.

The court-ordered injunction was read to the group of individuals blocking the roadway and they were provided an opportunity to leave the injunction area or face arrest. Some people refused to leave, and 14 individuals were subsequently arrested for breaching the injunction (civil contempt of court).

A correction needs to be made to the number of arrests from yesterday’s news release. Instead of the approximated 25 individuals taken into custody for breaching the injunction by blocking the roadway, there were 14 who were arrested by end of day.

A report was received by the Lake Cowichan RCMP that a vehicle used primarily as an ambulance by Teal-Cedar Products Ltd. was vandalized and had its brake-lines cut, and the engine was tampered with. The Lake Cowichan RCMP are investigating, and have photographs of the suspect. That investigation remains active and ongoing.

Since enforcement began, the RCMP have now arrested 48 individuals; 43 for breaching the injunction (civil contempt of court) and 5 for obstruction.

All news releases on the Fairy Creek Watershed police enforcement issued to date can be found on the Lake Cowichan RCMP Detachment website.
