The Summerland RCMP with assistance from the Penticton South Okanagan Similkameen (PSOS) RCMP Crime Reduction Unit executed search warrants at two Summerland residences in relation to an investigation of multiple thefts of mail.
In December 2023, the community of Summerland experienced a rash of thefts from mail boxes. The mail box locks were opened without damage meaning some may not realize they are victims of theft. The ongoing police investigation led to the search warrants of the two residences on January 16, 2024. During the search police recovered mail from residents of Summerland as well as residents of Peachland. A .22 calibre rifle was also seized during the search.
In order to reduce the risk of being a victim of mail theft, the Summerland RCMP recommend retrieving your mail daily whenever possible as the majority of these thefts are believed to have occurred overnight, states Sergeant Jason Bayda, spokesperson for the PSOS RCMP.
