On April 6, 2025, at approximately 2:00pm, Powell River RCMP received a report that two people were trapped under a residence that had collapsed on Patricia Crescent on Savary Island.
Savary Island Volunteer Fire and EHS arrived on scene and determined that the house was being renovated and was in the process of being lowered onto a new foundation when it collapsed. Two men were located underneath the house by Savary Island Fire and were confirmed deceased. A third man had escaped with serious injury and was transported to qathet General Hospital by EHS and is expected to recover.
The Savary Island Volunteer Fire department worked tirelessly to raise and stabilize the house in order to reach the deceased men. The men were extracted with the help of EHS, the BC Coroner’s Service and the Powell River RCMP.
The Powell River RCMP investigation has determined that there was no criminality involved.
On April 8, 2025, at approximately 8:00 am, Powell River RCMP received a request from Quadra Island RCMP to assist with intercepting a stolen boat in the Mitlenatch Island area. The boat had been stolen out of Campbell River and tracked via GPS and RCMP Air Services to the Mitlenatch Island / Cortes Island area.
Powell River RCMP agreed to assist using the police vessel. While en route, Powell River police officers were advised that Quadra Island police had located the stolen boat and were escorting the boat with two suspects to the dock at Manson Landing on Cortes Island.
The stolen boat was secured and the two suspects were arrested for Possession of Property Obtained by Crime over $5000. The suspects were transported by boat to Campbell River where they were handed over to Campbell River RCMP.
On April 5, 2025, Powell River RCMP received a report that multiple election signs had been broken overnight throughout the community.
During an election, it is important that political debate be driven by respecting the rights of fellow citizens. Destruction of property threatens the integrity of our democratic process.
Powell River RCMP would like to remind everyone that interfering with election signs is a criminal offence under the Criminal Code and the Canada Elections Act and can result in fines or charges.
On March 8, 2025 an E bike was found at the Seabreeze Resort on Hwy 101. The manager of the resort reported that the E bike had been sitting near the washrooms of the resort for several weeks and had not been claimed by any of the residents.
