Owner of vehicle held accountable for motor vehicle accident

On July 29, 2024, Powell River RCMP received a report that a vehicle crashed into the concrete barrier at the end of Ontario Avenue, drove through some heavy bush and then fled the area. Witnesses provided a description of the vehicle and police reviewed video surveillance of the incident.

Police conducted patrols of the area and located the vehicle parked nearby across the street from the registered owner’s residence. The vehicle had extensive damage that was consistent with the damage at the accident scene. There were no occupants in the vehicle and the owner was not located. An intoxicated male was found near the parked vehicle but denied being involved in the accident. The male was arrested for public intoxication and held in cells until sober. The truck was towed by police.

The owner of the vehicle was located the following morning and denied being involved in the accident. Police explained that as the owner, he was fully responsible for the actions of the vehicle and was issued violation tickets for drive without due care and fail to remain at the scene of an accident contrary to the Motor Vehicle Act.
