Pedestrian safety tips

With back-to-school just around the corner, the Terrace RCMP would like to take a moment to remind our pedestrians of some valuable safety tips while walking the streets of Terrace.

On average, 2,346 pedestrians are injured in BC each year, and 1 in 5 people killed in car crashes in BC are pedestrians (as per ICBC statistics).

Tips for safe walking:

When crossing at intersections, watch for drivers turning left or right. They may be focused on traffic and not see you.
Use the crosswalks whenever you can and follow the pedestrian signs and signals.
Scan your surroundings before crossing to make sure it’s safe.
Make eye contact with drivers, never assume that they have seen you.
Remove your headphones and put your cell phone away so you focus on what’s in front of you.

Also, remember that crosswalks are meant for foot traffic, not bicycles.

Let’s decrease the number of pedestrian-involved collisions in Terrace. Teach your children pedestrian safety, and lead by example.
