During the week of July 8-12, 2024, BC RCMP hosted a group of 23 young women from across British Columbia, who participated in the Young Women in Public Safety Program.
The Young Women in Public Safety Program is aimed at building awareness of the range of careers available in the public safety and security fields. The goal is to provide female high school students with the opportunity to meet women who occupy various positions in Public Safety institutions.
Throughout the week, there were RCMP specializations that participated and were able to showcase their line of work. The young women were presented to by a Tactical Flight Officer with Air Services, as well as the Integrated Homicide Investigation Team, Covert Operations and the Combined Forces Special Enforcement Unit (CFSEU) where the End Gang Life prevention campaign was discussed. The Integrated Emergency Response Team displayed some of their tactical equipment. The young women were able to learn how to use equipment from the Integrated Forensic Identification Services as well as the Digital Forensics Services. The BC Highway Patrol highlighted their safety equipment, including a tour of a police vehicle.

I was grateful to have the opportunity to assist with coordinating the Young Women in Public Safety Internship Program. We were able to showcase the journey of women mentors within the RCMP and the diverse job opportunities. I hope to work with them at some capacity in the future. There are many roads to take, as long as you soak in the adventure, said Cst. Salma Wahid, BC RCMP Recruiting
