Bike theft is a community issue- protect your bike

The Nanaimo RCMP wishes to remain people that bike theft continues to be a concern in our community with at least one bike being stolen every 2 days. During the summer months, the number of bikes reported stolen increases significantly. Bikes are not only a means of transportation but also a source of enjoyment and exercise. Losing a bike to theft can be distressing and financially burdensome, however; there are several steps we can all take to minimize the risk of bike theft and protect our valuable belongings.

Here are several steps to take to help minimize the risk of bike theft:

• Use a high quality lock: Invest in a sturdy lock and always secure your bike to a fixed and immovable object, such as a bike rack.
• Choose safe locations: When leaving your bike unattended, try to park it in well-lit and busy areas where it's easily visible.
• Register your bike: Keep a record of your bike's serial number and take photos of it. Register your bike with the local police or bike registry, as it will increase the chances of recovery if it's ever stolen.
• Avoid leaving valuables: Don't leave valuables, such as lights, GPS devices, or bags, attached to your bike when unattended.
• Secure bike Storage: If possible, keep your bike inside your home or a secure bike storage area when not in use.
• Be Vigilant: Report any suspicious activity related to bike theft.
• Spread Awareness: Encourage friends, family, and neighbors to follow these preventive measures and raise awareness about bike theft.
