School Liaison Officers, who are a part of the Community Policing Unit at West Shore RCMP, routinely attend schools in School District 62. On a recent visit to a secondary school, Cst. Mark Hall was speaking with a school administrator who mentioned that two students had their bikes stolen before they moved to the West Shore. Biking was the students main form of transportation to and from school everyday, having their bikes stolen left a big impact on them. After hearing this, Cst. Hall reached out to Metchosin Fire and Rescue who provided two refurbished bikes to the students through their bike program.
When abandoned/stolen bikes are turned into the West Shore RCMP we try and get them back to the rightful owners. However, if the bikes are not claimed within 90 days they are turned over to Metchosin Fire and Rescue. Metchosin Fire and Rescue hosts a community bike program and works with local community partners to refurbish and rehome the bikes to community members in need.
We are happy to get the students back on their bikes, just in time for the great spring weather. The smiles on their faces when they received the bikes made my day, – Cst. Mark Hall. West Shore RCMP Community Policing Unit.
