Fatal vehicle collision near Kitchener, BC

On April 4th at approximately 5:30 pm, Creston RCMP, Creston Fire Rescue and BC EHS responded to a 2-vehicle collision on Highway 3 near Kitchener, BC. Upon arrival at scene, crews urgently worked to treat the 3 people involved in the collision. RCMP Investigators determined that the vehicles were opposing one another when the Eastbound vehicle crossed into the oncoming lane, colliding head on with the Westbound vehicle. The Eastbound vehicle came to a stop down an embankment along the riverside, challenging rescue efforts due to its location. The Westbound vehicle remained on the shoulder of the highway. Sadly, the drivers of each vehicle were deceased on scene. The lone passenger in the Westbound vehicle was extricated and transported urgently to advanced medical care, in serious condition. A 33-year old woman and 65-year old man, both from the Creston area, are deceased as a result of the collision.

The cause of the collision remains under investigation; however, it is believed that alcohol impairment may have been a factor. As both drivers are deceased, no criminal investigation or statutory prosecution will take place.

This incident is a truly tragic loss of life. Many civilians witnessed the event or were part of the rescue efforts as well. No matter the experience level of an emergency responder, rescue efforts in circumstances such as this pose serious psychological challenges.
