File # 2023-30003
A Nanaimo woman recently got the fright of her life when she awoke to find an unknown man fast asleep on her living room couch. The incident was reported at approximately 5:30 AM on Monday August 28, 2023, at a townhome located in south Nanaimo.
The homeowner, who wishes not to be identified, called 911. When officers arrived, they found a grossly intoxicated man who appeared to be passed out on her couch. The officers attempted to speak with the individual but due to his impaired state, he could barely recall his own name, said R/Cst Gary O’Brien of the Nanaimo RCMP.

The 22-year-old Nanaimo man was arrested for break and enter then taken to cells to sober up. The homeowner was not interested in charges and told the officers that she had forgotten to lock her doors when she went to bed, which was probably how the man got in. There were no signs of forced entry and nothing was missing. The officers and homeowner surmised that the individual had simply wandered into the wrong townhouse.
This appears to have been an alcohol fueled case of mistaken identity. Having said that, it was certainly a wake-up call for the homeowner and a great reminder for everyone, to ensure all exterior doors and windows are locked before retiring for the evening, said O’Brien.
