Residential fire leads to sudden death in Rossland

On Wednesday, November 27, 2024, at 2:06 a.m., frontline Trail and Greater District RCMP officer and Kootenay Boundary Fire Rescue respond to fire inside a residence in the 800 block of Monte Vista Drive, in Rossland, BC.

Officers observed the residence to be fully engulfed in flames as responders arrived at the scene. A 49-year-old Rossland man living inside the residence was not accounted for and presumed to be deceased inside the residence. This was later confirmed by investigators after the fire was extinguished. Officers conducted a thorough investigation and examination of the scene. Foul play is not suspected at this time in the cause of the fire or man’s death.

The matter was turned over to the BC Coroner Service.

This appeared to be an accidental and tragic incident for the small community of Rossland. Please take care to prevent fires in your home this holiday season, says Sgt. Wicentowich

Trail RCMP continue to focus on impaired driving enforcement during holiday season

On Friday, November 29, 2024, at 9:45 a.m., a frontline Trail and Greater District RCMP officer was patrolling in a marked police vehicle when he observed 21-year-old Castlegar man and his vehicle who appeared to be evading him after spotting the officer’s vehicle, in downtown Trail, BC.

The officer detained the man and his vehicle roadside near the intersection of Eldorado Street and Pine Avenue. The man claimed that he was going to shop at a business that had been closed for several hours. The officer believed that the man’s ability to operate a motor vehicle was allegedly impaired by alcohol. A demand was read to the man who provided a breath sample roadside that resulted in a ‘fail’.

The 21-year-old Castlegar man was issued a 90-day Immediate Roadside Prohibition (IRP) under Section 215 of the BC Motor Vehicle Act. His vehicle was impounded for up to 30 days.

Gassed out and running on fumes

On Saturday, November 30, 2024, at 5:54 p.m. a frontline Trail and Greater District RCMP officer received a report of a vehicle driving erratically on Highway 22, near Trail, BC. The officer patrolled and located a 76-year-old Fruitvale man and the vehicle parked outside a business in the 1500 block of Second Avenue.

The officer allegedly detected a strong odor of gasoline coming from inside the vehicle. The officer spotted a full gas can inside the man’s vehicle. The officer believed that the fumes had affected the man’s ability to drive and instructed the man to remove the gas can from inside the vehicle before continuing to drive. The man complied with the officer’s request then elected to get a safe ride home.

The officer issued the 76-year-old Fruitvale man a $368 fine for Drive without Due Care contrary to Section 144(1)(a) of the BC Motor Vehicle Act.

Gas fumes can caused driving impairment, and worse. Gasoline should to be secured in a safe location when transported by vehicle, as well as not leaking fumes into the inner compartments, says Sgt. Wicentowich

Traffic stop smokes out illicit tobacco and drugs

On Saturday, November 30, 2024, at p.m., a frontline Trail and Greater District RCMP officer was patrolling when he observed a 42-year-old Montrose driving his vehicle without wearing his seatbelt on Bay Avenue, in downtown Trail, BC. The officer detained the man and vehicle roadside.

While roadside, the officer observed a carton of allegedly unstamped (no taxes paid) cigarettes inside the vehicle. He arrested the man for possession of illegal cigarettes under the Excise Act. The officer searched the man incidental to his arrest and located approximately 70 grams of a substance believed to be a street drug. The officer also discovered via police computer query that the man’s vehicle was uninsured.

The officer issued the 42-year-old Montrose man a $109 fine for Wrong number plate contrary to Section 220(4) of the BC Motor Vehicle Act, a $598 fine for No insurance contrary Section 24(3) of the BC MVA, and a $167 fine for Fail to wear a seatbelt contrary to Section 13(1)(c) of the BC MVA. The officer will forward a report requesting criminal charges o Crown Counsel.

The investigation continues.

Trail RCMP officers have seen a rise in the possession of illegal, unstamped tobacco in the Trail area. The penalties can be serious if you are caught, says Sgt. Wicentowich.
