Kitimat RCMP weekly report July 25th - July 31st 2024

Smoking truck

A report of a vehicle that was travelling along Highway 37, but appeared to be smoking badly enough to cause a hazard. was received by the Kitimat RCMP during the late afternoon of July 25th. A description of the vehicle was provided, which enabled the investigating officer to locate the truck and its owner. It was found that the truck was having a rather major mechanical problem and it was parked awaiting repairs. (2024-2714)

90-day immediate roadside prohibition

Officers of the Kitimat RCMP were alerted to a possible impaired driver during the early morning of July 26th. The vehicle and driver were located and an investigation into the impaired operation of a motor vehicle was initiated. It was found the driver had consumed alcohol after providing two samples of their breath. The driver was issued a 90-day immediate roadside driving prohibition and the vehicle was impounded for 30 days. (2024-2722)

Parking lot fender bender

The Kitimat RCMP was advised of two vehicles that had a slow speed collision in a parking lot on the 900 block of Lahakas Blvd on July 26th. There was light damage to the vehicles and no injuries reported. Both parties stayed at the scene. A Kitimat RCMP officer attended and advised both drivers which information needed to be exchanged so that a report to the insurance companies could be made. (2024-2726)

Garmin SOS call

At approximately 5:20 pm on July 27th, the Kitimat RCMP received a call regarding a Garmin SOS alert that had been received. It was fond that a pair of kayakers on the Gamsby River has run into conditions that would not allow them to continue to kayak, and the area was very dense so they could not hike out either. There was no injuries and the pair were prepared to stay overnight if required. Kitimat Search and Rescue was engaged and assisted in successfully locating and rescuing the pair on July 28th. Luckily the duo had been well prepared for any emergencies they may have encountered (2024-2739)

Parking lot hit and run

A report of a hit and run between two vehicles was received by the Kitimat RCMP on July 28th. The hit vehicle had been parked at a business on the 500 block of Mountain View Square, when a second vehicle had run into the unoccupied vehicle, causing extensive damage to the front bumper, before leaving the area. A witness was able to provide a description of the offending vehicle, including a license plate number. The investigating officer located the vehicle that had left and the driver was issued a violation ticket for fail to stop after collision with unattended vehicle. (2024-2749)

90-day immediate roadside prohibition

While on routine patrol in the downtown Kitimat area on July 28th at approximately 8:40 pm, a Kitimat RCMP officer observed a vehicle that had been described as a vehicle of interest on an earlier file. A traffic stop was initiated and the Kitimat RCMP officer began an impaired operation of a motor vehicle investigation. A sample of breath was provided which resulted in a ‘Fail reading, indicating the driver had consumed alcohol before driving. The drover was issued a 90-day immediate roadside prohibition and the vehicle was impounded for 30 days.

Bus stop collision

The Kitimat RCMP was made aware of a collision between a vehicle and a bus stop on Wakashan St, at approximately 12:40 pm on July 29th. The Kitimat RCMP officer arrived on scene and found that a vehicle had veered of the roadway and through a bus stop. Luckily, there was no one waiting for a bus at that time. The driver was issued a violation ticket for the incident. The vehicle was able to be driven away with minor damages, however the bus stop was demolished. (2024-2759)

Intoxicated in public

On July 30th, at approximately 10:40 pm, a Kitimat RCMP officer was parked doing some work in their police vehicle when they noticed a person stumbling across the parking lot near the Lower City Centre mall. The person was exhibiting symptoms of being intoxicated and was found to have open alcohol with them. After being arrested for causing a disturbance by being intoxicated in a public place, they were lodged into the Kitimat RCMP detachment cells, being released the following morning without charge. River assistance

At 5:10 pm on July 31st, the Kitimat RCMP received a call regarding an incident at Hirsch Creek, near Highway 37. Kitimat RCMP officers attended and found that a 32-year-old male had jumped off a well known ‘jumping’ bridge into the creek below. The male appeared to be in distress and may have required assistance. Other rescue agencies were deployed and the male was found along the shore of the creek. He was taken to a local hospital by emergency health services for observation. Hirsch Creek is a popular recreational area and the bridge is known for persons to use to jump off, into a pool of water in Hirsch Creek below. The Kitimat RCMP would like to remind everyone enjoying the summer weather to please be safe and be prepared for emergencies while you are enjoying your recreational activity of choice. (2024-2773)
