Kitimat RCMP weekly report June 27th - July 3rd 2024

Excessive speed

While on routine patrol on Highway 37 on June 28th, a Kitimat RCMP officer noticed a vehicle driving toward them at what appeared to be a high rate of speed. A check with the police vehicles RADAR unit confirmed the vehicle was travelling at 144 km/h in the posted 100 Km/h speed zone. A traffic stop was initiated. The driver was issued an excessive speed violation ticket with a fine of $368. The vehicle was also impounded for 30 days. (2024-2324)

Windshield damage

The Kitimat RCMP received a report of a vehicle that ended up having an excessively damaged front windshield while traveling along Highway 37 near Onion Lake, during the afternoon of June 29th. It was reported that a black object had flown up and impacted the windshield. The impact was so great that the vehicle was no longer drivable and required to be towed from the scene. There were no injures reported from this incident. (2024-2341)

Check stop

Between approximately 9:00 pm and 11:00 pm on June 30th, several officers form the Kitimat RCMP detachment conducted a check stop on Haisla Blvd by Forrest Ave. In that time, an estimated 200 vehicles were checked for Motor Vehicle Act compliance and sobriety. 5 violation tickets were issued for various Motor Vehicle act violations, including no insurance. Check stop

The Kitimat RCMP and two partner agencies preformed a joint check stop along Highway 37 from 8:00 am until 10:30 am on July 1st. During the check stop, Fishing and Wildlife regulations along with Motor Vehicle Act and Impaired driving checks were completed. An estimated 600 vehicles were checked. A minimal amount of violation tickets were issued. One violation ticket was issued for fail to slow down or move over near a stopped vehicle. (2024-2360)

Suspicious occurrence

After a resident reviewed their personal CCTV footage in the Nechako neighbourhood, the Kitimat RCMP was called for a suspicious occurrence. It was noticed that an unknown person had attended the residence and taken a photo of the front of the house. Patrols were conducted and no one matching the provided description was located. After reviewing the footage again, a name of a possible suspect was provided. A follow up was done and the photographer was identified. The photographer stated they liked the look of the doorway, so took a photo and was very apologetic for any issues their actions had caused. (2024-2367)

Suspicious driver

On July 2nd, at approximately 11:45 pm, the Kitimat RCMP received a call of a vehicle that was being driven on Nalabila Blvd and was being suspicious or possibly being operated by an intoxicated driver. A good description of the vehicle was provided, resulting in the vehicle being located by the investigating officer. The driver was found to be sober and not having any medical issues. (2024-2387)
