Kitimat RCMP weekly report November 21st-November 27th, 2024

Intoxicated in public

A report of a possibly intoxicated male was received by the Kitimat RCMP on November 21st at approximately 6:15 pm. It was stated that the male was behind a business on the 200 block of City Centre, where he was located by the investigating officers. The male was arrested for causing a disturbance by being drunk in public and appeared to have an injury, so was taken to a local hospital to be assessed. The injury was minor so he was treated and taken to The Kitimat RCMP cells to be held until sober. (2024-4206)

Bus vs moose

At 4:26 am on November 23rd, a collision between a bus and a moose on Highway 37, near Onion Lake was reported to the Kitimat RCMP. The investigating officers attended and luckily, the driver and passengers were uninjured. The moose appeared to have left the scene as it was not located. The officers stayed on the scene until a second bus arrived to allow the passengers to continue their trip. (2024-4232)

Excessive speed leads to IRP

While conducting speed enforcement activities along Highway 37 on November 24th, a Kitimat RCMP officer observed a vehicle he believed to be travelling at a rate higher then the posted speed limit. A reading was obtained from the officers Radar equipment which showed that the vehicle was in fact travelling at 145 km/h in the posted 100 km/h speed zone. A traffic stop was initiated and an investigation into the impaired operation of a motor vehicle was initiated. The driver refused to provide a breath sample into an approved screening device, resulting in a 90-day immediate roadside driving prohibition. The driver also received a violation ticket for excessive speed and the vehicle was impounded for 30 days. (2024-4246)

Hirsch Creek hit and run

A hit and run to vehicle that was parked at Hirsch Creek on November 25th at approximately 1:00 pm was reported to the Kitimat RCMP on November 27th. It was reported that while the vehicle was parked, someone had hit the vehicles bumper causing damages. It’s a good reminder to always check your vehicle for damages and report it right away if damages are found. (2024-4271)

Facebook fraud

A citizen from the lower mainland contacted the Kitimat RCMP on November 26th to report a fraud that had occurred over Facebook marketplace. The victim had noticed a pet for sale and was requested to send at deposit and shipping. The money was sent through e-transfer but the pet never arrived when it was supposed to. The victim attempted to phone the scammer but the phone number was from the states and was not able to be connect to. This is a very good reminder that you must be very diligent when making purchases online. People are not aware that once you’ve made an e-transfer, there is no way to track that transaction, or get your money back. Only send money to reputable people an in a manner that that you can track or have insurance on to get your money back if the transaction fails. (2024-4263)

Single vehicle collision

On November 27th, at 8:42 am, the Kitimat RCMP received reports of a single vehicle roll over collision on Highway 37 just north of the Cable Car subdivision. The investigating officers attended and found the vehicle had gone off road right into a deep ditch causing the vehicle to roll several times. The driver was taken to a local hospital with minor injuries. (2024-4274)

Light up Kitimat

Make sure you swing by Upper City Centre this Sunday, December 1st to check out Light up Kitimat. There will be Officers from the Kitimat RCMP in attendance handing out candy canes with a festively decorated Police car to check out. Not only will Santa Claus be there (4:00pm), there will be indoor and outdoor vendors (3:00 pm- 5:30 pm), a Christmas tree lighting (4:15 pm) and Carolers singing (4:45 pm). Come down, join the fun and let’s get into the Christmas Spirit!!
