Recent scam cost someone a large amount of money

Vanderhoof

2025-02-14 11:21 PST

It has been reported to the Vanderhoof RCMP that a scam has cost a resident a significant amount of money.

In this case the victim was contacted and asked to help out with a bank sting operation. The caller spoofed the Vanderhoof RCMP phone number and claimed to be a member of the Vanderhoof RCMP.

The victim, believing the RCMP was on the other end of the line, was directed to remove funds from their personal account and then deposit the funds in specific ATM’s in Prince George where the funds would be converted to Bit Coin. The victim was then provided with a QR code that was forwarded to the scammers.

We would like to remind the public that the RCMP does not, and will not, ask for assistance with any investigations in relation to banks or transference of money. If you should receive this type of call, hang up, do not provide any information and report it to the police.
